Honey Buffalo Wings

honey buffalo wings recipe

Buffalo wings will always be one of my favorite things to eat on the planet. If that makes me just a little less classy, so be it. That being said, it’s safe to say that my honey buffalo wings are pure amazing-ness. Is the picture above not proof enough?

I used to only eat wings at restaurants because I thought that making buffalo wings at home would be too difficult. Boy, was I wrong. It’s super simple and you don’t even need a deep fryer! Word on the street is that you can cook them in the oven if you want to be healthy but I cannot promise that they will come out as crispy that way.

Before starting this recipe, make sure you have some time before you plan on serving these wings. The trick to crispy wings is putting them in the fridge for about an hour before frying them. Also, if you just want to make classic buffalo wings, no problem: simply leave out the honey in the sauce. Now, here is the recipe for all you buffalo wing lovers:

  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 package of chicken winglets (these are smaller than a normal chicken wing; usually there will be 10 wings per pack)
  • vegetable oil for deep frying the wings
  • 1/4 cup butter (1/2 stick)
  • 1/4 cup hot sauce (use Frank’s Red Hot if possible)
  • 2 tbsp of honey
  • 1 dash ground black pepper
  • 1 dash garlic powder
  • Celery for side
  • Carrots for side
  • Blue Cheese Dressing for dipping (best brand is Marie’s Chunky Bleu Cheese; found next to the salad)

Cooking Directions:

Rinse the chicken wings with water and dry completely with paper towels (the drier the wings now, the crispier they will be later!). Set aside.

In a medium sized (depending on your batch) glass bowl, mix the flour, paprika, cayenne pepper and salt until everything is distributed evenly. Place the rinsed and dried wings in the glass bowl along with the flour mixture and cover with Saran wrap. Gently shake the bowl until all of the wings are evenly coated with flour. They should look like this:

With the dish still covered in Saran wrap, place it in the fridge for about 1 hour. Remember, you cannot skip this step if you want crispy buffalo wings!

After the wings have been in the fridge for about 50 minutes, take out a medium-sized pot and fill it with about 1 inch of vegetable oil (if you have a deep fryer, lucky you! Use that). Put the burner on high and heat the oil to around 375 degrees F. This should take around 5-10 minutes. I usually check by flicking some water into the oil and if it pops a little bit, you should be all set.

Once the oil is ready, turn the burner down to medium-high and gently place the wings into the hot oil. You should be able to put all the wings in at once, just make sure that every wing is completely covered with oil. Fry the coated wings until they are golden brown on the outside. While the wings will technically be “cooked” in about 10-15 minutes, I find that it usually takes more like 20 minutes to see that nice golden color that you’re looking for.

While the wings are frying, combine the butter, hot sauce, honey, black pepper and garlic powder in a small saucepan over low heat. Stir the ingredients together until the butter is melted and the sauce is well blended. Remove the buffalo sauce from the heat and and set aside.

You can also take this time to chop up some celery and carrot sticks to have on the side.

When the wings are golden, remove from the heat. Carefully take the wings out of the oil and directly onto paper towels to soak up some of the grease. Once all the wings are removed, place them into a large bowl. I would recommend to use a different bowl that the one you wish to serve the wings in because this step gets a little messy.

Give the sauce one last good mix and pour over the wings. Mix everything around until the wings are evenly coated with honey buffalo sauce and then pour the wings into your serving bowl. Serve with chopped celery and carrots and blue cheese dressing. Enjoy!
